By etching the faces of the heroes of the Haitian Revolution and subsequent political leadership on blue monotone mirrored plates, Duval-Carrié has created a “color-blind” brotherhood. His choice of medium has eliminated the necessity of defining their skin tones and perceived level of racial mixture, whether black, brown, or beige. Whatever their differences were vis a vis alignments with white colonial power structures or black nationalism, this is now a homogeneous group. Indeed, anyone who gazes at these mirrored portraits will see themselves likewise transformed, as their reflections will come back at them as blue shadows.
